Lockbriar Farms

Lockbriar Farms

Family run farm specializing in berries and tomatoes

Lockbriar Farm is a family-run business. We have been growing fruits and vegetables since 1989. We started out growing strawberries and after a few years, we decided to shift our operation towards retail. In doing so, we were able to diversify into vegetables and other fruits.

Help with variety selection and growing methods was obtained from the University of Maryland Wye Research Center and USDA Fruit Research Station in Kearnysville, W.V. We also attended conferences every year to stay abreast of new technology, varieties, etc. As we continued to grow, we added raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, gooseberries, currants, and elderberries plus a full line of vegetables including sugar corn, cantaloupes, watermelons, and tomatoes- including High Tunnel/early tomatoes. Our farm is open to "U-Pick" starting with strawberries in May, followed by raspberries, blueberries, apples, peaches, plums, apricots and sweet cherries.

Here, at Lockbriar Farms, we strive to grow the best quality fruits and vegetables possible, using IPM (Integrated Pest Management) practices and reduced spraying with organic products whenever possible. We are committed to a cleaner, healthier environment for our family, farm, and community.

We have been through the GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) training sessions and are in the process of becoming GAP certified. We were in the Federal Program Farms to Schools last year. Money was put aside for schools to purchase local farmers' fruits and vegetables to be provided to elementary school children in the morning before class and at the end of the day before they went home. They were instructed by teachers as to what variety of fruit or vegetable they were eating in the hope of getting children at an early age to want to eat more fruits and vegetables. This is a great program and we hope it is in the budge for 2009!

We hope to see you soon. While you're online today, please visit Lockbriar Farms and check out our "Fruit" and "Vegetables" web pages or if you're interested in agriculture, see "Growing Berries".

Maple Hill Farm

Maple Hill Farm

Old-fashioned farm using draft horses instead of tractors

Maple Hill Farm is located just across the PA state line, where we share a border with Lincoln University. We grow a multitude of fruits and vegetables. Our goal is to farm in a manner that is self-sustaining.

My interest in farming stretches back to when I was two when I've been told that I first helped my grandfather pick tomatoes on the farm. As long as I can remember gardening and livestock have been involved in my life.

We moved to our current farm in 1981 and our goal was to create a homestead rather than a commercial farm operation. Our goal then, which remains the same today, was to grow as much of our own food as possible, including our dairy and meat. To this day we still keep two milk cows for our own use. As our farm evolved we became interested in selling the extra produce we were growing, so in the mid-1980s we started selling produce to the Newark Co-op.

Our farming goal is similar to our homesteading goals. We use our work horses for power on our farm, recycling their manure along with our dairy and chicken manure back into the ground providing the fertility for our cash crops. We grow all the feed for our livestock on our farm completing a sustainable circle. To further our commitment to a clean environment we are now considering installing either solar panels or a wind mill for generating our electric power.

Desiring to keep our farm as simple as possible my wife Carol and I provide the only labor for our farm. Our crop basis is fairly diversified starting with our greenhouse crops, and then featuring a diversity of vegetables and fruit crops. Additionally we strive to use as few chemicals as possible on our farm.

Maple Hill Farm supplies the Co-op with it's Free Range Eggs year-round and provides Bedding Plants, Herbs & Flowers seasonally.

Frog Forest Gardens

Frog Forest Gardens

Daylily farm with Hostas, Cana, Lilies and selected perennials

Daylilies have been called the perfect perennial-and we agree! They are hardy, drought tolerant and low maintenance. Modern hybrids are very different than the roadside "tiger lily". Through the efforts of hybridizers of the last 50 years, daylilies are available in every color except blue. Plain or fancy, there is something for every taste. We have just over 600 named varieties, from the older classics to newer varieties with eyes and edges. Blooms begin in late May and continue through August and into September. Peak bloom time is mid-June to mid-July. Potted plants are available for purchase and bare root plants can be ordered for September pick-up. Bare root hostas are available in spring and fall. Asiatic and Oriental lilies are available in pots in the summer. The following perennials are available spring through fall: Astilbe, Coral Bells, Columbine, Coreopsis, Salvia (Sage), and Veronica.

We are located at 496 Old Elk Neck Road, North East, MD. Please call 410-287-5980 for information or email Frog Forest Gardens

This past winter, he heated his greenhouse with a woodstove. He also keeps a giant vegetable garden. Nick has been attending farmers markets and fairs for years with his fun and unusual varities of cacti and succulents, vegetable plants, house plants, annuals, bedding plants, perennials and orchids. Blackbird Heritage

Blackbird Heritage

Heirloom vegetables, herbs and flowers

Our 2009 lineup includes more than 30 heirloom vegetables, herbs and flowers... from candy-striped beets to purple carrots. But crazy colors and unique varieties don't mean anything if the food doesn't taste good. We love to cook and wouldn't sell anything that wasn't superb in both texture and flavor. Our family made the decision to focus solely on heirloom vegetables for a number of reasons: First of all they taste better.  Compared to their hybrid cousins heirloom varieties are juicier, sweeter, and generally more attractive. Secondly, we can save the seeds. This is very important to us from a sustainability standpoint. And the ability to save seeds ultimately leads to healthier, more pest resistant plants.  By choosing the best fruits for our seed stock we breed a strain of vegetable perfectly suited to our piece of soil, resistant to the local pests and adapted to the unique micro-climate of our farm. This is how these historical species have survived for hundreds of years. It is our goal to make sure generations to come will be able to enjoy these delicious vegetables. Although labor intensive to produce and fragile to handle, these fruits will delight in appearance and taste.

For more information, please visit Blackbird Heritage.
